Vishnu Sahasranama: Mantra with Meaning Vishnu Sahasranama is a Sanskrit devotional hymn which contains the thousand names of Lord Vishnu. It is one of the most sacred and popular stotras in Hinduism. The Vishnu Sahasranama is found in the 149th chapter Anushasanika Parvam of the Great Epic Mahabharatha. Each name eulogizes one of His countless great attributes. Prince Yudhisthira, the eldest of the pandavas, at the end of the war approached Bhishma Pitamaha, the mighty grandsire of the Kuru family, when he was lying on the bed of arrows awaiting the scared hour of his departure to the feet of the lord. Yudhisthira asked Bhishma the six questions on how to attain the highest goal, be free from sufferings, and who is to be worshipped. To his question, Bhishma stated that mankind will be free from all sorrows by chanting the thousand names of Lord Vishnu Who is the all-pervading Supreme Brahman, the Master of the worlds, the Supreme Light, and the Essence of the Universe.
