Mahamrityunjaya Mantra (महामृत्युंजय मंत्र)

The Mahamrityunjaya Mantra, also known as the Tryambakam Mantra or the Great Death-Conquering mantra, is a verse of the Rigveda addressed to Tryambaka (the three-eyed one), the Rudra avatar of Lord Shiva. This Mantra is said to be a secret mantra known only to Rishi Markandeya. Recitation of this mantra is beneficial for mental, emotional and physical health. It is a Moksha mantra which bestows longevity and immortality. By regular chanting of this mantra with full devotion, one can be protected by Lord Shiva from untimely death, critical illness, diseases, and evil spirits.

It is by this mantra alone that Sage Markandeya was protected from Yama (God of Death) when he was trying to take away Markandeya's soul. Due to the extreme devotion of Sage Markandeya for Lord Shiva, he was blessed with immortality, even if he was destined to live only for 16 years at the time of his birth.

ॐ त्र्यम्बकं यजामहे सुगन्धिं पुष्टिवर्धनम्
उर्वारुकमिव बन्धनान्मृत्योर्मुक्षीय माऽमृतात् ॥

Om, I worship the three-eyed One (Lord Shiva), Who is fragrant (spiritual essence) and Who nourishes all beings,
May He severe my bondage of Samsara (worldly life), like a ripe cucumber naturally severs itself from the vine, and thus liberate me from the fear of death.
